August 1-4, 2011 - Holiday Inn - Orange County Airport, Santa Ana, California - USA Aug. 1 - An Overview of Applied Vacuum Technology Course Objectives - Be introduced to the fundamental concepts of vacuum technology. - Learn about common vacuum system hardware and instrumentation, including pumps, gauges, flanges, valves, and feedthroughs. - Understand applications and processes involving vacuum technology. - Benefit from a just right two day course (when you don't have the time or the need to attend a four or five day introductory course). Course Description The course begins with a definition of vacuum and a description of the physical conditions existing in a vacuum environment. Following this introduction will be a discussion of gases at low pressures and the interactions between gases and solids. The phenomena of gas flow though vacuum systems will then be examined. The primary components of vacuum systems, with an emphasis on pumps and gauges, will be described. Requirements for materials compatible with the vacuum environment will be discussed. Various sealing techniques will be described, including coverage of all demountable flange systems in common use today. Common vacuum system configurations and operational procedures will be outlined. The course will finish with a description of vacuum leak detection methods and the far reaching applications of vacuum technology today. Ample time for questions and discussion will be scheduled. A comprehensive list of references will be provided for those wishing to learn more detailed information about specific areas. The emphasis of the course will be to provide practical information for individuals with minimal training in vacuum technology. Aug. 3 - Vacuum Vessel Engineering Course Objectives - Identify your vessel performance requirements by analyzing and managing risk. - Review standard and unconventional structural and mechanical design solutions. - Understand the affects of vessel design on vacuum pump down and ultimate pressure. - Learn practical acquisition strategies, including vendor qualification, contract options, and Statements of Work, while containing costs with appropriate specifications. - Add up-to-date vacuum vessel resources to your toolbox. Course Description Vacuum vessels are basic infrastructure workhorses in a tremendous variety of applications and industries, including aerospace, microelectronics, lasers, and high.energy physics. A vacuum vessel is often a large capital investment that has a major impact on the cost, schedule, and technical performance of a system. Success in designing or specifying a vessel to meet aggressive requirements relies on a careful assessment of present and future operations and a graded approach to managing risk. Early decisions can have enormous leverage on not only the initial acquisition, but also the long.term operability and efficiency of the facility that it serves. This course will review practical issues to consider when deploying vacuum vessels from bench scale to 100+ tons. The use and limitations of national standards, such as the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel code will be presented. Sample calculations are presented for spherical, cylindrical, and rectangular shells. Numerous examples of real vessel designs are shown. Additional topics include fabrication, cleaning, and installation; safety margins, weld details, pressure relief, windows and seal designs. The course offers guidance for choosing an appropriate acquisition strategy, including a review of specification options and when to use them. Resources provided include codes and standards references, sample procedures and forms, commercial components, vendor contacts, government agencies, and web links. Attendees are encouraged to bring case studies from their workplace. Time will be reserved discuss vacuum vessel issues of specific interest to the course participants. Aug. 4 - UHV Design and Practices Course Objectives - Understand the pump factors that limit ultimate pressure. - Know the degassing methods that minimize the total outgassing rate. - Learn how to measure total and partial pressures in UHV. - Learn the operating methods necessary to maintain UHV. Course Description Ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) is a required environment for many research areas, such as surface science (which requires the use of electron, ion, and neutral spectroscopies), as well as for many technological areas, such as thin.film growth of electronic and optical materials. In this course, the techniques involved in the production, measurement, and operation of such pressure levels are discussed. In addition to kinetic theory, system design elements..such as methods of pumping, materials selection, materials processing, outgassing considerations, system degassing, instrument degassing, surface effects, pressure.limiting factors, methods to shorten pumpdown time, and sample transfer systems..are reviewed. Special emphasis is given to total and partial pressure measurement within UHV systems. Various applications requiring an operational UHV environment are also discussed. The course concludes with an open forum to exchange new ideas and techniques. 2nd Vacuum Symposium UK
Oct. 18 - 19, 2011 - Coventry, UK For some time the UK vacuum community has called for an annual national meeting incorporating both technical and commercial elements. Following the successful VS-1 meeting held at Daresbury in February 2010, we wanted to build upon this foundation to provide something for everyone in our unique community: including FREE training seminars for new vacuum users, technical talks for the more experienced vacuum user and a vacuum equipment exhibition for everyone. We are pleased to announce that the VS-2 meeting will be held at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry on 18/19 October 2011. The format of the meeting will be different to that originally scheduled to take place at Diamond / RAL in March. However, plans are well advanced and a full programme will be published by 30th June. The two days are distinct vacuum related meetings:- Tuesday 18th October 2011. RGA10 - the 10th meeting of the successful Residual Gas Analysers User Group. Wednesday 19th October 2011. Advances in Vacuum Pump Technology. In addition, Training Modules will be held both days as originally scheduled. The meeting dates and venue have been chosen to coincide with Vacuum Expo 2011 - a vacuum manufacturers exhibition that is held in conjunction with Photonex 2011 (Light & Imaging Technology) with cross over to Thin Film technology. The meeting is being organised by the Vacuum Symposium UK + RGA User Group committee with support from the IOP Vacuum Group and British Vacuum Council. HTE-HI.TECH.EXPO 2011, 4th Edition
Nov. 16 - 19, 2011 - Milan Fair Centre - Rho, Milan, Italy Great success for the third edition of the event of innovative technologies HTE-hi.tech.expo, which took place last November in Milan and in addition to the sectors of vacuum, ultra-high vacuum and coating, photonics and nanotechnologies, displayed those of coil winding, insulation and electric motors (WEM EXPO), electric and intelligent vehicles and transportation (EIV), humanoid and service robots (ROBOTICA): more than 10,000 square meters of exhibition area, with over 140 exhibitors coming from 18 countries, 45 conference sessions, and a good 242 speakers, among the top international experts in the involved sectors. The event, which took place simulataneously with the great event dedicated to renewable energies (ENERSOLAR), was visited by 29,300 qualified operators coming from 74 countries and understood how to meet the expectations of its exhibitors, comparing the world of advanced research with that of interprise, industrial research and education. HTE-hi.tech.expo offered a thorough split of the world of the most innovative technologies: of photonics, with the very latest applications of laser and vision technologies to nanotechnologies. From plasma technologies to the diversified universe of vacuum, ultra-high vacuum and coating, to the layer of the art of research relative to controlled thermonuclear fusion. The area dedicated to the manufacturing industry of coil winding, insulation, and electric motors (WEM EXPO), furthermore, in its first edition has already established itself as the point of reference for the sector. Great interest was shown in the area of conferences dedicated to electric and intelligent vehicles (EIV).
